Hygiene
Make sure your finger and toe nails are well-groomed. If you have long hair, you’ll want to put it up in a ponytail or bun during class. You should also remove any piercings to prevent injuries.
What do I need to wear?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is traditionally practiced using a Gi which is a uniform which is typically composed of a heavy cotton jacket, reinforced drawstring trousers, and a belt which communicates rank/grade.
No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing rash guards, spats and shorts. Similar to clothing worn when training MMA.
What is sparring?
During the class you will be paired up with a partner and will practice for 5 minutes in a live fighting environment. You will start on your knees, if you are caught in a position or lock which is uncomfortable or painful then tap your opponent and they will release. As BJJ is a non-striking martial art there is no punches or kicking and in-class sparring will often start light and build in pace.
