Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting and submission holds. It focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one’s opponent, gaining a dominant position and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.
Our club has been based in Chichester for over 10 years, with members coming from many different backgrounds and disciplines. We are an affiliate of One Jiu-Jitsu which is lead under our head coach Ivam Maciel. Classes are taught by our senior instructors who have been all been training under professor Ivan for many years.
We encourage a relaxed atmosphere in our club, practicing a range of rule sets and styles. Our classes are split between Gi and NoGi Jiu Jitsu. We collectively complete frequently with our members winning medals in regional, national and international competitions.
We are always welcoming to new beginners and returning practitioners. Many of our members have train with other clubs and gyms. Not just in the UK but around the world, with members even training in Brazil learning under Jiu-Jitsu legends such as Ricardo De La Riva and Eduardo Brigadeiro

FAQ’s
Hygiene
Make sure your finger and toe nails are well-groomed. If you have long hair, you’ll want to put it up in a ponytail or bun during class. You should also remove any piercings to prevent injuries.
What do I need to wear?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is traditionally practiced using a Gi which is a uniform which is typically composed of a heavy cotton jacket, reinforced drawstring trousers, and a belt which communicates rank/grade.
No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing rash guards, spats and shorts. Similar to clothing worn when training MMA.
What is sparring?
During the class you will be paired up with a partner and will practice for 5 minutes in a live fighting environment. You will start on your knees, if you are caught in a position or lock which is uncomfortable or painful then tap your opponent and they will release. As BJJ is a non-striking martial art there is no punches or kicking and in-class sparring will often start light and build in pace.
